5 reasons why Rustom would be a decent movie to watch this weekend

Over the years, Akshay Kumar has carved out a niche for himself. With movies like Airlift, Baby and Special 26, he has proved his worth time and again. As his latest film ‘Rustom’ hits the theatres today, we could not wait but watch it first day, first show. So, here is our review of the film- 5 reasons why Rustom would be a decent movie to watch this weekend.

1) An Intriguing Storyline-

‘Rustom’ is based on the infamous K.M. Nanavati case.  The plot is as follows- a Naval Commander, Rustom Pavri (Akshay Kumar) returns home to find out about an affair his wife Cynthia (Ileana D’Cruz) is having with a millionaire playboy, Vikram Makhija (ArjanBajwa). He loses his cool and shoots down Vikram at his residence. Despite all the cinematic liberties and factual manipulation, the story is intriguing and thoroughly entertaining. The screenplay is fast-paced and will there isn’t a single moment of boredom throughout the 150 minutes runtime.

2) Courtroom Drama-

Courtroom Drama has always managed to grab public attention. Same is the case with Rustom. It might not be as flawless as the Award winning film ‘Court’, but it is much better than most of the other films of its type (including the recent ‘Azhar’). And if you think Rustom is all about thrill and suspense, then you are wrong. The movie has several light moments in its second half, enacted brilliantly by Kumud Mishra, Usha Nadkarni and Sachin Khedekar.

3) Akshay in the titular role-

Akshay Kumar, in the titular role, is a treat to watch. Dressed in a white Navy Uniform throughout the film, Akshay does a splendid job in portraying his character. The fact that he was trained by Vipul K. Rawal (writer of “Rustom”), who himself is a former Navy Commander, reflects clearly in the film. This is one of his better films, though not his best.

4) An ensemble cast-

Any review would be incomplete if it doesn’t mention about Pawan Malhotra, who delivers a nuanced performance as the Inspecting Officer. Kumud Mishra, as Erich Billimoria, might surprisingly win an award for the best supporting actor (for the numerous other movies he has worked in, this year). Usha Nadkarni and Sachin Khedekar will tickle your bone with their acts.

5) Neeraj Pandey and Akshay Kumar after Special 26 and Baby-

Neeraj Pandey and Akshay have been known to deliver some of the finest films- be it Special 26 or Baby. This time too, Pandey (who is the producer, and not the director) has managed to produce a decent film. Rustom might not be as good as Airlift, Baby or Special 26, but it surely is a decent watch this weekend.

P.S: This post does not mention about Ileana D’Cruz’s badly done make-up or Esha Gupta’s constipated/ seductive look, as it was not worth mentioning. 

Recommendation- 6.5/10
